UPDATE: When Trump issued this rule last week, USDA buried analysis showing more than **HALF A MILLION** kids would also lose automatic eligibility for free school meals.

On top of the 3.1 million people who’d lose Food Stamps.

Kudos to the eagle-eyed staff in @BobbyScott’s office for uncovering this.

@BobbyScott is right, Trump should withdraw the rule. Federal law requires that proposed rules include “relevant scientific & technical findings.”

Half a million hungry kids at risk of losing school lunch if this proposed rule takes effect is like the definition of “relevant.”

Evonne Silva of @codeforamerica rightly notes that legal remedies like expungement and sealing have intentionally been set up to be hard to access.

Case in point: A recent @UMich study found just 6.5% of people eligible for expungement get their records cleared within 5 years.
@arthurrizer of @RSI challenges the advocates on left & right in the room to come together to call out “bullshit laws” and hold our policymakers accountable to doing better.

Notes we must not just address low-level records, must not ignore felonies, records tagged as “violent.”

This one spurred audible gasps:

*Two-thirds* of black men w/o HS degrees have now been to prison.
Another inextricable link that doesn't get nearly enough attention: health & disability.

"The deepest material hardship in the year after being released from prison is suffered by those in poor health."

Not mentioned but vital to remember: People with disabilities are also far more likely to be swept up into the CJ system in the first place.

People behind bars in prisons and jails are 3 to 4 times more likely to have a disability than the general population.

So thrilled so be with a powerhouse crew of researchers today at @UMich discussing the growing research base making the case for bringing #CleanSlate automated record-clearing to all 50 states!
Two table-setting findings offered by @UMich researcher Sonja Starr making the case for automating record-clearing:

- One year after a record is cleared, wages ⬆️ >20%

- But under a petition-based system, just 6.5% of eligible people get their records cleared within 5 years

1. There are two ways to look at this #ItalianElection2018. One is the electoral outcome: a badly hung parliament. The other is the political message: an anti-establishment triumph.
2. Let's start with the electoral arithmetics. It's ugly. None of the three blocs (Centre-right, Centre-left, 5 Star Movement) will be able to secure a majority. We will need some form of grand coalition, which, in a way is what we always expected.
