I don't believe it's possible to succeed at anything if you don't understand the 80:20 rule.
Also known as the Pareto Principle, this rule suggests that 20 percent of your activities will account for 80 percent of your results.
The key to success is to find the 20% of the activities in your sphere that will have the most significant impact on your success.

Don't just do all the tasks in front of you; focus on the most important ones.
80:20 rule - Focus on the most important success factor. i.e. the key driver of success in your field.

A few example:
You work in banking:

The key driver of success is an understanding of finance and marketing.

Don't succeed at operations without understanding finance and marketing.
You work in tech:

The key drivers are market awareness and "design thinking".

Don't succeed at coding without developing basic awareness of market dynamics and design thinking.
You work in advertising:

The key drivers are strategic thinking and client sensibility.

Don't be the great copywriter who can't be trusted with client meetings.
You work in architecture:

The key driver is storytelling.

Don't be the good architect who can't paint a picture with words and images to release client budget.
You are a postgraduate student:

The key drive is research productivity.

Don't focus on your coursework at the expense of your research. Your research is more important than your coursework.
You're a CEO:

The key drivers are profitability and board management.

Don't chase other metrics.
80:20 rule - What is the 20% that releases 80% of your results?
