A lot of people have a hard time accepting that there's no force that ensures consistency on these things. There is no magic. It's just humans using their own judgment and making decisions that impact other humans.
Something I realized a while back is that your engagement with social justice work might hinge on how far you've come in accepting this truth. Once you know that the stats we see everywhere ultimately come down to humans making selective decisions, you can't unsee it.
Using this example, if we were able to see data about when journalists and writers get dismissed for cause, I would put cash money on that data showing it happens disproportionately to people who aren't white men.
The thing we never get to talk about is why this kind of pattern tends to repeat. I mean we know what to name it. But we don't get to talk about how it happens. How white dudes get away with shit that other people can't.
Unfortunately, I don't have time to dig in on this right now either. But somebody needs to be talking about it.
