I was talking to @operaqueenie about this recently. Human culture has always run off of stories more than anything else. In many ways, rhetoric around "the data" is often used to reject truth and bolster someone's story.
I've also been thinking a lot about the American rhetoric around individualism and how it's purpose is to destroy culture. A big part of culture is shared stories that bind us together. Whiteness seeks to strip people of the ability to band together by telling the same story.
That's partly why this thread had such an impact on me. It brought a lot of clarity to how the individualism story serves to create helplessness and despair in the face of global and historical challenges.
The individualism story is like a virus that infects other stories and twists them until they separate people rather than bring them together.

Anyway, these are very uninformed thoughts right now. That's probably why it sounds like philosophy more than anything concrete.
