Prosecutorial decisions are the greatest drivers of racial disparity in sentencing and in the explosion of incarceration. We need reformist prosecutors who will work to change the system from within, to push for transparency and accountability.
But what person of a mind to reform the system would run for office if purists will use the simple fact they enforced the law to attack them. The way the purists are attacking @KamalaHarris will discourage progressive lawyers who have higher ambitions to seek work in prosecution
@KamalaHarris In particular, we need more prosecutors of color, we need more Black prosecutors, who will work to redress the bigotry that sends white offenders to diversion and black offenders to prison. But damn, they better not want to seek any higher office.
@KamalaHarris The #KamalaIsACop theme is pretty much announcing that Black people better stay out of criminal justice work, not be cops, DAs, judges, or anything else if they want to run for office. Which leaves criminal justice to people who have no desire to change it.
@KamalaHarris I really can't with the reductionist, elementary thinking that suggests #KamalaIsACop is about any kind of justice. It's about saying this occupation is off-limits to Black people if they want to do politics.
