BBC Test Match Special makes you love the game so much more

Very different from TV commentary. Very relaxed. Rambling. Anecdotal. Tidbits from history. Not too analytical

Untouched by the ravages of time
Jonathan Agnew not all that removed from McGilvray or Arlott from the 40s
Today in the tea break, there was discussion on TMS on MJK Smith - the former England captain from the 1960s, and a local Warwickshire great. Someone who would hardly ever be discussed on TV

This kind of keen attention to local figures distinguishes TMS from say Sky Cricket
Ofcourse the level of analysis is much lower

Nobody as brilliantly insightful as Mike Atherton on the TMS box

But the focus is different on radio. It's about being endearing. Caring for history. Localisms
E.g. Someone like a Phil Tufnell or Henry Blofeld are no better than most fans at analysis.

Yet they enliven radio with their discussion of some of the birds on the ground, the menu for lunch, or other such quotidian tidbits
