What is irking most people is - this administration represents a departure from the old ways of doing things
Of kicking the can down the road
As Modi and Shah are outsiders to Lutyens, they exhibit a certain child like earnestness that is discomfiting many
The old nostrums are being revisited.
Not always for the better I agree. But they are revisited nonetheless
E.g. Demonetization represented a mis-step in my view
But this is inevitable when you get a fresh perspective on things. Which can sometimes be a bit raw. Yet fresh nonetheless
Law making in India can never get too radical. Except from the Left. Never from the Right
E.g. We can have the odd radical left-wing moves. Like Bank nationalization. Or Derecognition of princes
But never for radicalism from the other end
That is changing now
Traditionally politicians have started with the premise that India is a fragmented society.
The belief was that people vote en-bloc
OBCs for their respective strongmen
Muslims for Congress etc
Modi revisited those assumptions
And he created narratives for the young who backed him across caste lines
A will not to get straitjacketed by the equations handed to you. But create your own equations
And you see that being extended in the policy domain - admittedly with mixed results
