I pretty much agree with both sides of this argument.
- I'll be playing with Bluetooth tools while at DEFCON, doing shenanigans.

If we can't secure computers while at DEFCON, then what the heck do we think we are doing as an industry??? The answer is that we can secure computers, the DEFCON WiFi (using a certificate) is reliably secure.
On the other hand, your laptop probably has insecure WiFi. It probably autoconnects to named WiFi without using a certificate, like "Starbucks". Vegas this week will be full of access points happy to oblige your attempts to connect to "Starbucks" and shenanigans.
Does your laptop use full disk encryption? Is WiFi/Bluetooth properly configured? Are you safe from somebody inserting a USB stick into your laptop? If your security fu is as good as it should be, there's nothing special at DEFCON that threatens you more than normal life.
On the other hand, even experts make a mistake. If you've left some door open a crack, there's more chance of somebody at DEFCON exploiting it.
