This is to all of you who support the Second Amendment and believe it protects your right to own lethal weapons. First, the Second Amendment itself:
Along with others collectively known as the Bill of Rights, the amendment was added to the Constitution in 1791. It reads "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
While the weight and meaning of the phrase "well regulated militia" has been hashed over many times and its meaning never set in stone, the Second Amendment still stands and for the most part protects the right of most people to own a lethal weapon.
When the Founders wrote and approved the Amendment, the most lethal personal weapon was the "Brown Bess." It was the equivalent of today's assault rifles in that it was capable of killing more people from a distance more quickly than any other personal weapon.
Modern assault rifles can fire dozens to hundreds of rounds in one minute. Compare that to the "Brown Bess":
I challenge anyone to tell me with certitude that the Founders who wrote the Second Amendment would not be horrified at the carnage they unknowingly caused over the years.
They would be horrified that the country they founded and loved is now the world leader in mass murders by far. The Second Amendment was written in and for a very different time. The time has long passed to honor and free those Founders from their deadly mistake.
It's time for the Supreme Court to rule that the Second Amendment allows ONLY members of a well regulated militia and our military to have access to personal weapons of mass destruction.
