Sayoc spoke in the court room and addressed the messages he posted online prior to the bombing.

"Now that I am a sober man, I know I was a sick man," he said. "I should have listened to my mother, the love of my life."
Sayoc's attorney claimed that he "slowly became deranged" by political news he saw, some of which was fake. He saw himself and Trump as mutually targeted, his attorneys claimed, rolling negative responses to his van's messaging into his paranoia.
