Reminder we've had an open white supremacist in Congress for years: Steve King of Iowa. He admits to believing in the Replacement Theory which is the same ideology of the Christchurch and El Paso terrorists. His district re-elected him in 2018.
Reminder that Trump used the white supremacist conspiracy theory of an "invasion" being possibly funded by George Soros, a Jewish American billionaire. This was the same fear that in party motivated the Tree of Life, El Paso and Christchurch terrorists.
Reminder that Steve Bannon has openly promoted the racist, 1970's novel CAMP OF THE SAINTS and recommends everyone read it. The uplifting and unifying work of fiction warns of brown savages and immigrants overruning Europe.
Reminder Tucker Carlson's daily show is beloved by white supremacists who see him as mainstreaming their ideas. Neo-Nazi Andrew Anglin says he is literally their "greatest ally." Carlson rails against immigrants who are dirty and pollute America. He also isn't a fan of diversity.
Reminder that many pundits, experts & media colleagues who were very critical of Trump told people of color not to take Trump's racism literally & seriously. It wasn't racism or racial anxiety but "economic anxiety." He's not racist but has "racial trip ups."

The pathway towards radicalization, whether its towards ISIS or neo-Nazis, is remarkably similar. The DNA is the same. Angry, dislocated people find belonging in an extremist ideology that gives them purpose and community. They can emerge as heroes of this narrative.

This ideology of supremacy creates a superior "in group" (us) and an inferior "out group" (them). There is no middle ground, no grey area. It is a zero sum game of dominance, where the in group's existence and purity is threatened by the out group, the invaders, the Crusaders. 3/

Anders Breivik killed 77 people in Norway. He left a 1500 page manifesto. He was proud & unrepentant. He felt he was saving Europe by punishing it for embracing Muslims & immigrants. 1/
Breivik's manifesto, written in 2011, cited the writings of many American anti-Muslim bigots who were once considered fringe. People like Pam Geller, Gaffney, Spencer, Horowitz, Pipes. In 2019, they are advising & close to people in Trump's White House. 2/
These Islamophobes were given a platform by Fox News and then by Steve Bannon when he ran Breitbart. Although they are not responsible for the terrorist attacks, Breivik emerged from the same ideological infrastructure. The rhetoric & hate was not cost-free. 3/

Thread: I've read the El Paso shooter's alleged manifesto. Police are validating it but say it indicates a nexus to a potential hate crime. I'd say say domestic terrorism. If valid, it shows the radicalization of a man who feels the American dream is stolen by immigrants. 1/
People who become radicalized are often angry, lonely individuals feeling displaced from society. They find a community & ideology online that gives them purpose & belonging. They feel they can be the heroes of this zero-sum war. Violence is necessary for self preservation. 2/
This El Paso shooter justifies his violence as an "act of preservation." These terrorists believe they are heroes saving white identity, culture & civilization. He cites the slaughter of Native Americans by Europeans as a warning to fellow whites. POC are the new invaders. 3/

When I say white America is racist. This is what I mean.

Even its "liberal" outlets are naturally inclined to minimize and obfuscate the plain truth of racism.

White supremacy defends whiteness at every level.
You don't have to hate Black people to support white supremacy.

You don't even have to dislike us.

You just have to care more about defending the reputation and respectablity of whiteness than dismantling it.
You want to know why white politicians are just NOW condemning Steve King after fifteen years of him being a racist dillhole?

Because it was more important that they minimized the idea that racism is pervasive than rid Congress of an open white supremacist.
