1/ Let me say this about the FSD deferred revenue. That cash has already been received, trousered, and spent. $TSLA is not sitting on a pile of deferred escrow waiting to be released.
2/ The revenue recognition is primarily a paper exercise for the earnings report. It will result in a large revenue increase with only a small amount of related COGS. By itself, it could turn a GAAP disaster into a “profitable” quarter.
3/ So besides this one-time profit event, why all the recent FSD urgency? For one thing, customer patience is running out. It’s only a matter of time before class action suits force Tesla to start refunding FSD money.
4/ But another black cloud has emerged that could occlude even the lawsuits. Insurance. Every day, I see more and more indication that FSD cars will be uninsurable in the near future. Tesla needs to extract every FSD dollar they can before that happens.
5/ FSD would be unmarketable after that. The associated cash flow would be cut off.

Software V10 will roll out soon. Ross Gerber expects it to be the gateway to FSD. Interesting times for sure.

Earnings Alert! 🚨🚨🚨

1/ OK now, where to begin? $TSLA pulled out all the stops to deliver a record number of cars last quarter.
2/ It hit right in the middle of Tesla’s guidance, but surprised most pundits who were expecting something in the 85-90k range. And there was a lot of strange gamesmanship played around “leaked” emails.
3/ But why was it important to push for a record? Was it to restore the legend of exponential growth following a dismal Q1? It hardly seemed worth the effort, especially considering the bleak sales outlook for Q3.

@tslaqpodcast @amithbn @montanaskeptic1 @phoennix10 Years ago, cylindricals enjoyed a significant cost advantage due to the market pressures imposed by the laptop industry. For a start-up company like Tesla 15 years ago, they were the only viable option. But there challenges when your design uses thousands of cells.
2/ Some of the down sides: 1) Connecting each cell requires 4 welds in the battery pack. It would be hard to get 30,000-weld design approved in a DFM review. 2) There are too many cells to monitor them individually. They must be monitored in “matched cell” groups.
3/ 3) You are limited to certain cylindrical form factors. You must design your battery pack around the constraints of the cylindrical dimensions.

I'm old enough to remember how evil it was that othermakers used rare earth magnets in their motors. $TSLA instead took the high road and used only induction motors. It was a big deal 7 years ago.
When the Model 3 was introduced, it was granted dispensation for reasons unexplained. Fast forward to today and now the entire lineup has joined the dark side. Again, no apology on Earth Day to an Earth with a rare supply of rare earth elements.
In related news, we welcome back the S75 and X75 into Tesla's lineup. But gone are the badges that they proudly bore. In fact, we don't even like to talk about kWh's anymore.

Die Riots waren politisch, ohne je großartig organisiert gewesen zu sein. Links(radikale) Gruppen solidarisierten sich, verpassten aber eine nötige Steuerung der Proteste. Wenn sich viel Wut hemmungslos entlädt, passiert leider auch ne Menge Mist. Wird nicht ausgelassen.
Im Gegensatz zu vielen Medienberichten kamen die Riots nicht überraschend. Die Banlieus standen kurz vor der Explosion, nur der Auslöser fehlte. Sozialprogramme wurden gekürzt, die Arbeitslosigkeit in den Banlieus war auf einem Rekordhoch, Busverbindungen wurden gestrichen.

$TSLA 10K observation one- we have an incentive problem (happens when your senior executive turnover is ~75% for 2018).

Also becomes a cash flow problem, as Tesla relies on options exercises for its cash flow.
two:

$TSLA is including its $30mm in legal fees for 2018 in "restructuring & other". Similar to the ever restructuring CAT & IBM, $TSLA legal is an ever ongoing cost.
three:

$TSLA downplays its legal exposure to the DOJ by framing the DOJ requests as voluntary & the only subpoenas coming from the SEC. However, we know conclusively from the SEC FOIA releases that the SEC has shared the subpoenaed materials with the DOJ

Recently the Tesla "shadow mode" has been in the news prominently again with raging debates if it exists or not and if it does - to what extent.

Let me explain to you what I learned on this topic in my reasearch #TSLA #TSLAQ 1/
We'll start with the bitter truth. The "shadow driver that just sits there in the computer comparing notes and sending discrepancies and interesting events to Tesla" is a myth. I used to think people just misunderstood Elon, but now I believe Tesla lies about it on purpose 2/
What Tesla actually has is automatic data collection of "events". This data collection has two facets: fixed and "campaigns" as I am going to refer to them. The difference is the "fixed" events are hardcoded in the code while "campaigns" are uploaded to (some) cars often 3/
