Long thread but please read regarding Beechmere- Over the last few days I have been meeting with people affected by the fire at Beechmere Residential Care Home. Understandably there are many questions that need answers.
Hearing from families facing increased costs and uncertainty over care provision shows why social care must be brought in-house - dignity in later life and independent living too important to be left exposed to the markets.
Serious questions to be answered over building regulations and appropriateness of 'stay put' policy, especially in a timber building with no sprinklers placenorthwest.co.uk/news/avantage-…
PFI has a lot to answer for. As this article suggests, delivering "on budget" was the main concern for this profit-making company - not safety. Its time we started to put people before profit
Lives were saved but livelihoods are a different matter. What will happen to the care workers is still unclear - after they helped save lives as their workplace was ablaze.
If social care was in the hands of the public sector they could be easily redeployed into other local units and given certainty regarding their income and continuity of service
I have met so many humble people this weekend. @CheshireFire and other fire services from over the borders have been outstanding in their response and support, as have @cheshirepolice . Huge thanks to the ambulance service, local GP’s, nurses and everyone @MidCheshireNHS
The local community has been remarkable. Never have I been prouder to be from Crewe. The residents I have spoken to have been so touched by the support and donations from across the constituency. Local businesses both big and small, have done so much and continue to do so.
The care workers both at Beechmere and across the constituency have been amazing. To all those who have helped with providing shelter and care for the affected residents thank you.
We dont thank care workers enough for the things they do every day for the most vulnerable in our communities but this week they went the extra mile to save lives whilst their workplace was on fire
Care workers are amongst the most underpaid and exploited workers in the UK - and mostly female - their heroic efforts during the beechmere incident should make us all re-assess that
I will be writing to the Prime Minister and others to call for an urgent re-think of UK building regulations. Were it not for our incredible community, lives would have been lost in Crewe this week - all to save a few quid. It's wrong and it shouldn't be legal
I want to say thanks again to the thousands of residents who joined me in calling to stop plans to halve the number of firefighters in Crewe. Times like these are terrifying reminders of why we can't do public safety on the cheap
