1 Burke’s constituents said much the same, and threw him out of Bristol for his opposition to anti-Catholic rioting.
2. Constituents don’t agree with each other, or even hold consistent view. Politicians’ somehow have to seek government while understanding their constituents’ opinions are various and inconsistent.
3. (and even les zeitgeisty than @pswidlicki here) we don’t have populism because we failed to listen to the people, we have populism because demagogues tell the people their unrealistic or base desires can be satisfied.

It’s become increasingly common to explain current failings by evolutionary biology, but this argument isn’t valid. Because 1/
2/ Current failings are different from (and sometimes opposite to) failing we had in the. Evolutionary biology therefore has to explain the occurrence of X now, and not-X in the past.

But then it reduces to a trivial statement
3/ This is that because we evolved, everything about us is the result of evolution, which is like saying that because God created the world, everthing we do is God’s work.

Why it's relevant that @RoryStewartUK has experience of working in countries where constitutional conventions are weak or ignored altogether. Thread.
1. Pro Brexit extremists have exploited on the complacency of the British governing class to propose ever more outrageous ideas. The political establishment laughs them off as unrealistic until it's almost too later. Viz -
2. Leaving the EU at all, leaving the single market, no deal, proroguing parliament, etc. The extremists set the terms of the agenda, and it becomes the new pole of debate versus the status quo.

Some thoughts on the coming election, which I invite you to read. (A thread.) 2019 is a mid-term election, and like all mid-terms, the senate results will serve as a referendum on the sitting president. Why is this so? Because every president has controlled the House of Reps.
This means, if a president passes the mid-term referendum, they have a chance to get more legislation passed through both houses while a president who fails the mid-term referendum will have a hard time getting what they want, for example charter change or in investigations.
But senate's composition also matters in other ways. It was designed to have a national perspective versus local one that reps. (logically) have. That's why reforms like RH or FOI pass easily in the Senate but often fail in the House. But that requires senators capable of vision.

I think one of the best and truest things I can tell you about writing a novel -- for me! -- is that it's very much an act of willfully getting lost, and the more you embrace that, the less you'll worry about it when it inevitably happens.
I plan stories and generally know the ending before I write (though half the time, it changes), and still, there's inevitably many points where I recognize I'm wandering through a dark forest with a dim and flickering flashlight.
(Curiously, an author's career is much the same.)

The backlash to globalization it turns out is not just protectionism--though there is certainly that. As it has manifested itself with Trump, UKIP, Orban, Salvini, the Russian-supported Euro-right, the "opposite" of globalization is ethnic cleansing, racist nationalism.
I have been an active advocate of globalization all my life. I am not only because I believe it ultimately benefits all people, but because it is not just a historical trend of the moment, it IS history. Global opening and integration is the story of the human race.
That said, there is no doubt, that we who support globalization underestimated both the dislocations associated with it and their human cost but also the nature of the reaction to it and how dark it could or would become. That was a profound mistake.
