The GDP of Denmark is about $350 billion per year. From that they pay out $500 million a year to provide for the Greenland people. To Denmark, a country that doesn't have the resources to fully capture the economic potential of Greenland, its a net drain on their country.
From an economic standpoint for Denmark it would make sense to sell Greenland. I think an offer was made years back for $100 billion. Denmark could probably hold out for a slightly higher price if a bidding war starts between the USA and China. The only two countries IMO..
...with enough economic power to be in the bidding process. So figure, maybe $200-300 billion final price tag. This would immediately give Denmark a $500 million yearly increase in their economy plus tue large one time sellers price.
The Greenland people have pushed for Independence from Denmark in recent years so they might look kindly on becoming a territory of the USA, like PR and all the rights and benefits that brings.
From the USA POV, the sale would give the permanent USA strategic location in the northern hemisphere over Europe/Russia. The US already has an Air Force Base in Greenland.
"Thule Air Base is home to the 21st Space Wing's global network of sensors providing missile warning, space surveillance and space control to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and Air Force Space Command (AFSPC)"
The economic potential of Greenland could be very big with oil, NG, minerals etc not only on Greenland itself but in the seas around it. A purchase would also deny those resources to other players like China.
Of course, the major drawback to a Greenland purchase is it's climate. It's not really green, more white. Yet, with modern technology it's riches can be major. It could also become a mecca for environmental tourism.
All in all, if the offer was made and accepted and the final price tag was reasonable, I think the purchase of Greenland by the USA would be a good deal for all parties involved.
Update. It appears that Greenland has made a counter offer...let the bidding war start......Trump visits Denmark on Sept 2nd. Also, interesting to note, Trump isn't first POTUS to suggest this. Pres. Truman appears to have made an offer in 1946 for $100m

A possible final point. The reaction by many on the left and a few on the right shows that these people have no vision. They are unable/unwilling to see the possibilities not just with Greenland but on issue after issue like space force, Mars mission, infrastructure, tariffs, etc
