Here are some thoughts from a recent newsletter article I wrote that may be of broader interest. This is about the benefits of applying for awards, grants and fellowships and is primarily geared towards graduate students, postdocs, and newly independent investigators. 1/6
If you feel you are competitive and a good match for an award, grant or fellowship put your name in, or ask someone to nominate you, even if you are not confident you will receive it. Many of us sometimes sell ourselves short – you may be more competitive than you think. 2/6
Here is the part that is more than just a pep talk: the review committees often include senior leaders in your field. Having those people become familiar with you and your work can pay dividends even if you are not selected. I did not appreciate that early in my career. 3/6
As a reviewer, I have often been highly impressed with the applicants for awards and grants, well beyond the eventual winner, and that is how I first came to know of several current rising stars in my field. 4/6
Some of the senior scholars who evaluate your application may later be the ones looking for people to fill valuable service roles (e.g., society committees, review panels), or they may wind up being among your tenure and promotion reviewers. 5/6
I am not suggesting to apply haphazardly for everything that comes along, as preparing apps takes time. Rather, if you think an opportunity matches your qualifications and interests, go for it! And if self-nomination is not possible, ask someone you trust to nominate you. 6/6
