1. Political ads on Facebook are still an absolute mess and the new policies announced yesterday will do little to solve the problem.

What really grinds my gears is that Facebook, a $500B company, expects other people to solve its problems

But it expects "watchdog groups" to root out bad actors? Shifting this responsibility to others is a way to increase profits

1. In North Carolina, Republicans are taking deceit and dishonesty to shocking new lows.

There are determined to subvert the democratic process and they won't let the law get in their way

2. Republicans couldn't come up w/the votes to override the governor's veto of the budget. So they told Dems there would be no votes yesterday AM and then, with few Dems in the chamber, held a surprise vote anyway

3. But remember, the only reason why Republicans are in control of the North Carolina legislature AT ALL is that they illegally gerrymandered the legislative districts.

The party couldn't convince enough Democrats to side with them to override the Governors' veto of the budget so Republicans held a surprise vote this morning while many Democrats weren't around

This vote, which will determine the state's budget for the next TWO YEARS was taken with LESS THAN HALF of North Carolina's House members present.

I'm no lawyer or poly sci, but logically the govt shouldn't allow companies to harm its citizens nor violate their constitutional rights. If #Facebook and friends had formidable alternative competitors this wouldn't be such a big deal; but they don't, nor will they ever. #BigTech
Their power is so absolute and concentrated, it will be literally impossible for any other company to start up and surpass them. This is akin to a mom-and-pop shop trying to take out Walmart; it's not going to happen and they know it.
Going to Gab or other sites does not solve the problem. It removes and quarantines you from engaging in larger public discourse . Such sites are basically echo-chambers. There you will find victims of political discrimination like yourself and you will be preaching to the choir.

If you're European, you probably got an email from FB this week, with this subject line:

"X, please accept our updated Terms by May 25 to continue using Facebook."

Now, let's talk about how non-compliant that subject line is. It suggest that failing to accept the new terms will result in account suspension. That's a problem.
#GDPR requires consent to be "freely given" and says that services can't be withheld just because the consumer doesn't consent to ALL THE TRACKING.

The last line of the email is "Please go to Facebook to review and accept the Terms" which reinforces the subject line threat.
