The book posits an Iron Law of Meritocracy, in which meritocratic systems will collapse in on themselves because eventually inequality of outcomes grow so vast, it's impossible to provide equality of opportunity. What you then get is something like aristocracy and oligarchy.

It is *deeply* revealing that the entire conservative movement gets #triggered if you say the simple truth about the electoral college.
These days, conservatism is a movement deeply paranoid and pessimistic about its own appeal, increasingly retreating behind counter-majoritarian institutions: the senate, the courts, the electoral college.
There was a time when conservatives were confident to the point of delusion that the majority of Americans agreed w them. Increasingly they realize that’s not true. They’re 1 for 7 in the last 7 presidential elections on that score and they know it.

I've been forecasting this for years.

If you're under the age of 25, listen to me. Chances are highly likely that you own very little wealth. You probably don't own a house, have very little savings and quite possibly in debt because of college.
The economy will slow down. This is inevitable at this point. Wages aren't gonna get better, and jobs will keep on sucking dick.

You have to be smart. You have to invest in yourself. You need to cut unnecessary spendings out of your life.
Stop wasting money on designer clothes. They're overpriced and made by some chinese kid under the age of 18. They lose value the second you buy them. They are hyped up by celebrities because celebrities are endorsed by the companies that make them. It is a bait. Don't bite it.

The single most influential metric of Trump’s chances is the @fivethirtyeight tracker of his job approval. It seems to show good news:

• Trump is significantly underwater.
• He has been continually underwater since his second month in office.
@FiveThirtyEight But poor approval ratings at this stage are not nearly as big a bar to reelection as most people assume.

Trump’s current approval ratings are very similar to those of… Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan at the same stage in their first terms!

theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… I appreciate the point, that it’s ridiculous that men get kudos for being half as good as women. But I also must point out that brow-beating and nagging is also work, and telling women to do more of it adds to women’s unfair work load.
The reason women do more work is simple: Men force them into a binary choice. You either a) do the work all by yourself or b) nag him. Most of the time, A, while exhausting, is less exhausting than B, which makes you miserable as well as tired.
In addition, men punish women for nagging. They withhold affection, mock women, and in worst case scenarios, abuse them. This is why I call it the “nagging differential” and it is, in my opinion, the main reason domestic labor differences persist.

theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… It really is remarkable that the president spouts Putin’s propaganda, and everyone shrugs because it’s not news that he’s Putin’s puppet.

Sure, there’s still work that needs to be done *proving* it, but that Putin owns him is not controversial anymore.
If you want to know what life under a puppet government is like, I suppose that’s it: The official line is the president is a democratic leader, but everyone just knows that he’s actually being controlled by a foreign power.
Also worth pausing to note that the same people who made 1984’s Red Dawn a big hit would now greet a Russian invasion by waving Russian flags and cheering their new leader Putin, with Trump at his side, in the streets.
