2. Mary Shelley and her husband were abolitionists. And like many anti-slavery advocates at that time, they had reservations about Black people being fully “freed”. There was always this notion that slaves who were “created” by slave masters, and freed, would seek vengeance
3. Mary Shelly’s father William Godwin was also a writer, who wrote extensively on the scientific racism that was a hot topic at that time. One of his essays was entitled “Washing The Blackamoor White”. So this gives you an idea on where Mary started to get her influence from
