As my annual summer reading intensive comes to an end, this brilliant book by ⁦@JeanneTheoharis⁩ is the one has most helped me make sense of the current moment, fully understand the forces arrayed against our work, & deepen my determination to persist no matter what.
It astonishes & infuriates me afresh that we purported to talk about busing for 10 days after the Biden/Harris exchange w/o @JeanneTheoharis being on our TV everyday to break down her meticulous account of school segregation in the north in “A More Beautiful & Terrible History.”
As the debate abt segregated education in NY intensifies, ppl shld take the time to learn abt the history of grass roots activism - Black parents who fought it- including the 1964 school boycott, & the weight of opposition they faced - from the City, white parents & journalists.
Stated perfectly: “segregation was about material denial, resource hoarding, & restrictions on the terms of first-class citizenship.” -@JeanneTheoharis
Desegregation was never about the magic of sitting next to white ppl: “...desegregation sought to disrupt th[e] limitations [on first class citizenship], spread the resources around, and demand full social citizenship. From the outset, the movement had that comprehensive vision.”
