In closing arguments, U.S. prosecutors hammer Greg Craig as motivated by greed and self-protection, spurred by Paul Manafort’s promise of seven-figure annual billings from their undisclosed work for Ukraine. washingtonpost.com/local/legal-is…
Craig lied to Justice officials about the nature of his work because “his reputation would have been tarnished if the truth that had come out,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Fernando Campoamor-Sanchez told jurors. “But now the truth has come out.”
Craig attorney William J. Murphy implored jurors to scrutinize the law and a 2013 letter from Craig explaining to DOJ investigators that he had his own reasons to speak to the NYT's Sanger-- to defend his and his Skadden Arps colleagues' work that he was not to contact media.
Murphy urged jurors to “salvage” Craig's reputation, built over 50 years: “We ask you to apply the evidence with the law and find him not guilty and prevent this prosecution from sounding a horrible, false note at the end of an incredible career of honor, service and integrity.”
BREAKING Jury finds Gregory B. Craig not guilty of lying to Justice Dept., deliberating less than five hours before acquitting him of concealing media contacts in 2012 related to his law firm's work for Ukraine.
