In dealing with oppressors, we often hear that Allah told Prophet Musa: "Tell him a gentle word," as an excuse for cozying up. This is a misuse of evidence because it didn't stop there. It escalated to an outright confrontation giving Pharaoh great discomfort.
If there's any lesson in Ashura, it's that oppressors should be given grief. Sayyidna al-Husayn didn't let Yazid off the hook easily. By forcing Yazid's hand, and having his generals end up killing him, their whole regime was cursed, and it ended a year or so later.
Oppressors and deviants love spiritual Muslims, like Sufis, because they know they'll get off easy. The Sufi won't give you a hard time. If that's the case, it's a big mistake. To give an oppressor comfort is to allow more harm. The lions of tasawwuf were never like this.
Oppression is not just of worldly matters. It is also of Divine rights. Allah has rights. The Prophet ﷺ has rights. The Companions have rights. The scholars have rights. Regular people, even animals, and even the soil of the earth has rights. Oppressors are not ltd to rulers.
