One of the things that I most love about being a parent is the chance to break cycles.

As parents we have a powerful choice we never had as children: to continue the patterns of the generations before us or break them.

We get to choose what we preserve and what we replace.

When I was a kid, I played football one season. My father came to our last home game.

It was unsaid but understood that he came less because he was so very anxious to see me play and more because there were no more “I’ll come to the next one’s” left.

It did nothing for me.

As a father to a son, I am so very different. I absolutely love going to his games. They are golden hours I cherish. I’m like a kid on Christmas morning on his game days.

Even if I didn’t, I’d be there but I’m lucky to truly love it.

Last night, after his first game, he went home with his other parent.

We spent the drive texting about the game and when we could FaceTime.

Lost in the subtext there, I had gotten to his game two hours early because I just like to be around it.

He shakes his head at me and laughs but there’s a cycle there. A new one.

One very different than the one from my childhood.

As parents, we get to choose what ‘normal’ our children take into adulthood.

We get to choose if it is healthy. Or not.

We get to replicate what we loved as kids - and we get to replace what hurt.

We get to decide.

My son has another game today. I’m sitting in a parking lot near the field. I’m two hours early.

The parent is there because they want to be. The child knows they will be.

That’s our cycle. That’s our normal.

As parents, we get to decide.

I so love that opportunity.
