Nothing I’ve seen or read or listened to has ever quite captured that feeling in the air in Austin on the Drag / Pease Park / eastside ca. 1994 except maybe a few scenes from Friday Night Lights and some Daniel Johnston tracks, which get close.

Banning political ads on Twitter does little other than slightly increase the already awful incentive structure for gaining enormous attention organically.
This is the only sensible part of the decision — getting rid of a small problem so Twitter execs can focus on a bigger problem. But... what's the quick and simple test to distinguish political from nonpolitical advertising?

Facebook has long had trouble with this. Try running an ad for an article related to a political subject and they'll consider a political ad. Such as this one, ironically: thenewatlantis.com/publications/g…

Mark Forkner is described as a "Boeing pilot working on the 737 Max" and "the chief technical pilot for the plane." Those are ambiguous descriptions. What exactly was his relationship to both Boeing and the Max project?
Here are clearer descriptions: "Mark Forkner, the Max’s chief technical pilot"; "As the chief technical pilot he was the primary liaison with the FAA on training and worked on the pilot’s manual." irishtimes.com/business/manuf…

Gilmore Girls is a depiction of people unaware of living in purgatory. No one changes or develops. Any given story fits as well in season 1 as 7 or 500. The Luke/Chris/Logan/Jess reshufflings are an eternal return, with cozy sweaters and robotic patter out to the horizon.
"A real date? Finally!! What are you gonna wear?"
"Glass slippers, a backwards baseball cap and nothing else."
The only Gilmore Girls character who has accepted the impossibility of redemption and chosen to live heroically with the knowledge of despair is Kirk.

A friend mentioned to me related to the project that he didn't really get the appeal of basketball. Here's my pitch:
I view sport as a competitive performing art. It's like ballet or opera, with more running into each other.
My own preference for basketball over other options didn't really connect with me until the first time I heard soccer described as "the beautiful game". To me, that description fits basketball better than any other major sport.

That's how sources described Newby's leadership of the EAC.

When he doesn't answer Qs, staff proceed with work — and sometimes earn reprimands for taking the initiative.
Newby repeatedly describes himself as "the face to other agencies," per a source, and he tells staff that "nobody should be talking to outside entities without his awareness and/or his approval."

This has slowed down the EAC's election security work w/ agencies like NIST & DHS.

I grew up a super-fan of SOAP. It was one of the first shows that I loved that I could tell was not meant for kids in any way, and I adored it. And a big part of the reason was because of Jessica Tate, played by the great Katherine Helmond.
It remains a singular accomplishment. She's sexy, she's hilarious, she's a space cadet, she's capable of enormous kindness and warmth, she's maternal, she's childlike... no one could have done what she did with that role. No. One.
When BRAZIL came out in 1985, it immediately became my favorite film. And again, one of the best things in that film is Helmond. Her work is so lacerating, such a brutal perfect embodiment of that fussy vanity, that desperate clinging to youth by bizarre means.

Lets get a little uncomfortable together and talk about trans infighting. I'm not subtweeting, anything I reference I've seen from multiple people. Imagine anything typed with a calm voice, I'm not sardonic or biting here. White trans folk may feel challenged, but we need it.
CW: all the shit trans folk experience including sui*, violence, murder, anxiety, depression, discrimination, erasure, as well as racism, and refugees in detention camps. I do not invite comparison or argument in the comments. I compare ONLY to give context. Cis folk, look only.
I'm predominantly talking about Australian trans communities, because that's what I know - please keep in mind communities and populations are different across continents.

Okay. So. Infighting! It suuuucks! It hurts all of us! It REALLY hurts nonbinary, PoC and questioning folk!

Alright! I've finished Bryan Caplan's The Case Against Education and it's definitely very interesting, although I remain unconvinced. This is gonna be real long, really more of a blog post, but I don't have a blog, soooo strap on in.

On a personal level I really love the signaling model. If you are not familiar, it's basically the idea that if you want to prove you have quality X, then you do wasteful and useless thing Y that someone WITHOUT X would have a harder time doing than you.
