Gilmore Girls is a depiction of people unaware of living in purgatory. No one changes or develops. Any given story fits as well in season 1 as 7 or 500. The Luke/Chris/Logan/Jess reshufflings are an eternal return, with cozy sweaters and robotic patter out to the horizon.

The only Gilmore Girls character who has accepted the impossibility of redemption and chosen to live heroically with the knowledge of despair is Kirk.

Each waking day is a stage dominated for good or ill, comedy, farce, or tragedy, by a dramatis personae, the 'self', and so it will be until the curtain drops.
