The Autism CARES Act is a $3.1 billion funding package that gives exactly zero dollars to any autistic-lead groups or initiatives.
That is billion with a “b.” Not a typo.
You’d think the government could at least throw some pocket change at self-advocacy organizations.

It’d be extremely cool if the Senate would throw a bone at #ActuallyAutistic-lead initiatives, projects, and organizations, but I’m not holding my breath.
There was something called the Schakowsky Amendment in 2014 that would have allocated funding for stuff like inclusion in Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) programs and collecting stakeholder feedback, but @autismspeaks crushed it.
Why? What was their rationale? How could anyone possibly justify blocking such modest concessions to the people the legislation is ostensibly for?

Anyway, this is why Autism Speaks is bad.
Not because they’re a “hate group.”
Because they’ve made concerted efforts to block and defund autistic self-advocacy.
