Okay, so: two mild critiques of this. 1) The reason it's different is because of the way the internet preserves things and because modern 'cancel culture' makes no room for reentry.

2) C'mon, South Park complaining about cancel culture when it's entering its 22nd season?
Some people without power and influence *are* getting canceled. Matt Stone and Trey Parker aren't getting canceled. They're getting mean comments on the internet. There's a ginormous difference.
Which is to say, cancel culture exists and it can be ruthless and it is, without question, unhealthy for a society that lives on the internet. But there are people who have made their living offending people and been so successful that they are out of cancel culture's reach.
They seem to realize this. Maybe just blowing off steam:
