#Unbelievable on Netflix is a mirror to the horrifying reality of many victims of sexual assault and what happens when they report. I hope it opens the eyes of viewers to their experiences and fuels a hard look at a criminal justice system fails them— more often than not.
Also, survivors, please take care of yourself and know that this series may be triggering for you.
The story is based on a true story. google.com/amp/s/www.esqu…
The difference between the investigators in episode 1 and 2 is a world of difference toward better, trauma-informed investigative techniques. We need more investigators like the ones from Colorado.
Additionally, the series underscores how the way a person experiences trauma— the way they present physically, emotionally, etc.— may differ widely from person to person. Before making a conclusion about motives a person may have for reporting/not reporting, remember this.
Further, if you watch the series, take note of how Marie’s background in foster care is simultaneously used to rationalize some behaviors and dismiss her account.
Hx of trauma may provide helpful context for understanding a person’s behaviors; however, it should never be reason to assume a person is being untruthful. In fact, many abusers exploit histories of their victims to make them seem less credible, therefore less likely to disclose.
