And yet these same reporters have done the same thing over and over again. It's clearly intentional and says a lot about people who keep falling for it and the New York Times for continuing to publish it.
I don't think people understand just how unethically these reporters have behaved. Just as another example that not many people know about. Kate Kelly snuck on to Georgetown Prep's campus last October during reunion weekend. That resulted in this story:

Keep in mind, Georgetown Prep is essentially a High School. Sources told me that Kelly did not tell school officials she was there. This was not a public event, Nor did she identify herself as a NYT reporter to some of the regular people she interacted with.
Further, she somehow obtained a recording of the speech from the school's President. Kelly also only contacted the school for comment on the story a few hours before it was published on a Sunday, and ran ahead with the story before they had a chance to respond.
