This #SundayMorning we're looking at a subpoena from House Intel chair Adam Schiff. He alleges a whistleblower complaint is being withheld from Congress by the Director of Intelligence in order to protect the President.

What is going on here?

(2) @K8brannen did an excellent thread on this.

As she suggests, details & timing of this subpoena indicates it has everything to do with a recent investigation into efforts by Trump and Guilliani to pressure Ukraine into providing kompromat on Joe Biden
(3) Schiff became aware of the whistleblower complaint from the inspector general of intelligence after launching the September 9th investigation into the White House efforts in Ukraine.
The inspector general deemed the complaint credible.

(4) Sidenote but inspector generals by definition are whistleblowers themselves. They were established in 1978 to oversee federal agencies and report fraud, waste, and mismanagement to Congress.

Like public editors, they're supposed to keep things honest.

(5) The whistleblower complaint was filed on August 13th. Director Dan Coats left on August 15th, so the "acting director" I-didn't-go-through-a-nomination-process Dan Maguire has seven days to turn it over to Congress.

Did he do that? NOPE.

(6) Instead, Maguire takes it to (checks notes) the DOJ and Presidential protector extraordinaire Billy Barr. Which is a pretty stunning breach of protocol all by itself that raises eyebrows.

It certainly alarmed Adam Schiff.

(7) Maguire's office is "reviewing" Schiff's subpoena. So far, their argument for withholding the complaint is that it contains "confidential and potentially privileged communications."

Which Schiff rightfully assumes is code for executive privilege.

(8) It may sound like a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo to all of us regular citizens sitting in the stands, but to Congress, it's a glaring red flag that the intelligence community, along with the DOJ is compromised.

(9) The intelligence community under Maguire has a new priority and it's not protecting America. It appears to be protecting this President from prosecution.

And that should frighten every last one of us. Republican and Democrat alike.

@TX_Lisa Correction: I mistakenly referred to the acting director of intelligence as Dan Maguire in one tweet. His name is Joseph Maguire. You can find more information about him here:
