This is my daughter’s public elementary school dress code. Notice they have the section on “modesty” bolded. 🙄

It hasn’t really been an issue until this year when her new teacher decided to start becoming the modesty police.
Suddenly sleeveless shirts she’d worn last year and her favorite romper cause anxiety. She’s begun to carefully choose clothes to avoid comments from her new teacher.

All the clothes she’s wearing in these pics she doesn’t dare wear anymore. 💔
Could we please stop sexualizing our little girls? She just wants to run and play and wear sleeveless shirts and comfy shorts without worrying about religious standards of modesty and chastity. I mean seriously @canyonsdistrict . She’s seven. SEVEN. It’s a public school.
Do you know what I say to her when she’s worried about to wear ? I ask her 2 things.

Are you comfortable in it? Can you do what you need to do wearing it?

If the answer is yes, we’re good to go. It should never be about imposing standards of modesty on little girls.

I hear we’re recounting episodes of “harmless fun” according to the @nytimes so I’ll add mine.

My hs class president & his bestie trapping me between them on a bed, groping me & trying to force their way into a locked bathroom to finish the assault.

Anyone who views these assaults as “harmless fun” is part of the problem.
You can share your episodes of #harmlessfun in the comments. I imagine many of these incidents don’t make it onto the radar of the perpetrator but they remain indelible in the hippocampus to the rest of us.

This is what it means to live in the patriarchy.

This #SundayMorning we're looking at a subpoena from House Intel chair Adam Schiff. He alleges a whistleblower complaint is being withheld from Congress by the Director of Intelligence in order to protect the President.

What is going on here?

As she suggests, details & timing of this subpoena indicates it has everything to do with a recent investigation into efforts by Trump and Guilliani to pressure Ukraine into providing kompromat on Joe Biden
(3) Schiff became aware of the whistleblower complaint from the inspector general of intelligence after launching the September 9th investigation into the White House efforts in Ukraine.
The inspector general deemed the complaint credible.

In my work as a sexual assault crisis counselor & in covering the #MeToo movement as a journalist, victims say the same thing over and over again.

Don’t bother going to the police. Don’t include that detail in your story. No one will believe it happened.
No one will believe me.
Victims have learned they have to be litigators & present only the things they can prove. Only the parts of their story the public will find palatable.

They inspect every angle. Turn their own assaults inside out, looking for the angle the police will take to undermine them.
Why don’t victims report? They do. Over and over and over.

To teachers. Friends. Parents. They reach out.

And every person who responds with incredulity drives a nail into the coffin of silence that eventually buries survivors.

Why don’t they come forward sooner?

My understanding of what it means to be Albertan, and Canadian, really began as a kid living and attending school in Mill Woods, a large, immigrant working class neighbourhood in Edmonton. Demographically, it’s one of the most diverse in Canada.
I went to Sakaw School, a public elementary school named after the Cree phrase for 'wooded area' for the Papaschase Cree whose land used to comprise Mill Woods. And, Sakaw was remarkable in that the world was found within its halls.

Hey there, Parents. Are you watching the news today about rich people cheating and making bribes to get their kids into college? Let me guess, your child's education is already stressful to you, and this kind of news makes the whole thing seem hopeless. Want some reassurance?
I'm in the trenches too. I've got 2 kids in college, 1 in high school, 2 in middle school, and 1 in 3rd grade. And my husband (their father) has 2 Masters and a PhD from Colombia in Philosophy & Education. Like you, we care very much about our children's education.
First thing to know: You’re not alone in your stress.

Nothing seems to push the buttons of parents across the land quite like the topic of schools and education. And no surprise. This is important stuff. We know education changes lives and opens doors.

The school, a public charter school, has justified the skirts requirement as promoting “chivalry”--the email from the founder explaining this justification is exhibit B to the complaint.

In the founder's words, chivalry means that a woman is “regarded as a fragile vessel that men are supposed to take care of and honor." The school has doubled down, justifying the requirement as promoting “traditional values” &“norms...about the difference between the sexes.”

Given those data points, this data point is almost inevitable, isn't it? (This is not one school's problem - it's the same thing powering every school dress code policy that punishes girls for "distracting" boys.)

This "UK person" said "she" was flying to DC soon and wanted to have coffee with my wife to discuss the possibility of including my daughter's school in their educational fund network. 3/10
