Once again, from country to country, the so-called nationalists turn out to be grifters and thieves. Just because they have followers who believe what they sell doesn't mean it's not a scam from top to bottom.
Not to say they aren't racists, fascists, and the rest of the trash ideology of they market. But once they realize they have power over people, usually stupid people, they immediately start fleecing them, abusing power, robbing the system, etc.
Scratch a nationalist, find a Panamanian bank account. For some it's a scam from the start, tho it's not like it's hard to find an honest racist anymore. But it must be like being handed a list of people who want to buy a bridge.
The corruption becomes explicit when they are exposed and move smoothly into "The others guy do it even more!" and even "Come on, can't a guy make a buck? I'd be a fool not to!"
Eliminating any potential conflict of interest is vital to a democracy. You're a public servant. If you still want to make money, run a business, etc., stay in the private sector. Raise their salaries, publish their finances, put everything in trusts.
Corruption is a big reason they push for political polarization. They want an atmosphere where even the most blatant criminal acts will be defended by their partisans, called fake news, etc. They want people so angry that only beating the other guys matters to them.
Deny everything.
Say it's a political attack.
Smear law enforcement.
Say it doesn't matter because the other guys do it more.
Say it's no big deal, let's talk about the country.
Say so sue me, whaddya gonna do about it?
