I've been thinking about this quite a bit.
Link here because the next 'graph is important. nytimes.com/2019/09/17/opi…
But I screenshot the part above because I think about this a lot, relative to what's going on in crime fiction.
All my life (and I'm old) I've listened to white men complain about their perception that women or people of color are receiving favorable treatment.
Newsroom colleagues complained about groups created to help minority writers in journalism.
Some crime writers joke that all they need to do is write under a female or gender ambiguous name and, voila, they will be successful.
Of course, probably the most successful person to write under a name meant to conceal gender was J.K. Rowling, who also chose a male pen name for her crime series, but never mind.
Anyway, no one's being silenced, no one's being censored, we do not have a masculinity crisis despite that weird ad I keep seeing for a male supplement that, I dunno, encourages testosterone?
When I hear these complaints, I feel like Wes Mantooth standing over Ron Burgundy at the bear pit and I just want to push that ladder OVER.
