I’m glad we’re talking about Baltimore but would love to see the conversation zoom out to consider all cities struggling with big problems.
And to consider how remarkable cities are, how they survive indifference (at best) and hostility (at worst).
The 2 cities beloved by me, Baltimore and NOLA, have terrible problems but also amazing assets.
Yet people CHOOSE to live in both.
During Saturday’s insanity (when we were doxxed, thanks) it was suggested there were slums 2 blocks away from our house. Not true but what if it were?
In 20 years of journalism the BEST beat I ever had was “poverty.” It’s achingly complicated and solutions are elusive.
One thing that helps — good public schools.
But even some “good” liberals wonder: why is the per pupil cost in poor districts so high?
(God, people can be dumb.)
My city neighborhood changed because my neighbors pitched in and helped to make the local schools viable.
But that’s not a sustainable model throughout the city. So our governor responds by — screwing the city schools over and over.
A better Baltimore would be good for Maryland.
