Dude, You think the most important thing "in fairness" to point out here is that a person sentenced to 5 days jail on Rikers Island for attempting to steal a packet of batteries from Home Depot will in fact serve 3 days not 5?

OK cool cool.
"In fairness," he should never have been arrested, never been prosecuted, never had to plead guilty to a criminal charge and be sentenced to any time in jail (even time served) because he didn't have money to afford bail that would allow him to fight the case from the outside.
Because this is a person who had not been arrested for 30 years and now he has a recent misdemeanor conviction and all the collateral consequences that come with that in terms of employment and housing and a myriad of other things you would never even imagine.
It also amazes me how casually people speak about poor Black and Brown people spending time in jail. Oh well it was only 3 days. Jail is horrific. Being arrested, spending a few hours in a holding cell is massively traumatic.
When people die by suicide in jail it is usually within days of their admission. Prosecutors and judges and people writing tweets need to understand one or two or three nights in jail can literally mean life and death for people.
People, as in just like them, not figures on an Excel spreadsheet.
