The "सम्मेलन" blooper at "Hindu Charter" meet reminded me of the different ways of writing this word in Hindi vs Kannada

Hindi: सम्मेलन

Kannada: ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ where "La" sound is "retroflex"

I think Hindi is closer here to the Tatsama
Don't think the retroflex is there in Sanskrit
Interestingly I discover the retroflex "La" exists even in Telugu!

Not sure about Malayalam.

I dont think this word is used all that widely in Tamil
Ofcourse we do have a Nagari symbol for the retroflex "La" - ळ

But do we have a lot of words that use it in classical sanskrit? What I hear is - the retroflex La is more common in Vedic language than in Sanskrit.

Not sure how true is that

To drive home this point, one only needs to look at the top American universities -

Count the # Pak students in top courses vs the # Indian students

Count the Indian professors in faculty vs Pak professors

You'll find a huge gap even if you adjust for population size
There are several reasons for this -

For one thing - The region that is Pakistan today had a significant Hindu population no doubt prior to Partition

But this H population was concentrated in the large cities, and among the bourgeoisie classes

Interesting thread on the Hindu canon and its evolution

There are two extremes

1. A historicist tendency to sequence texts...e.g...samhita->brahmana->upanishad->itihAsas->purANas

2. A naive traditionalist view that the shruti canon is apaurusheya and anAdi
The former assumes that texts can be bucketed into specific timeframes

This approach bases itself on the current recension of the texts, and ignores that many of these "texts" were originally oral traditions which have undergone much accretion
So while it may be true that the current recension of the mahApurANas is likely much younger than the early upanishads, there may be parts of the mahApurANas which indeed date back to the late Vedic period, as the thread hints

This probability has increased lately in part because of the huge Democratic advantage in California, New York and a few other coastal states, where their surplus votes push up the popular vote %

Democratic vote share in California:

1996 : 51.1% (Clinton)
2016 : 61.7% (Hilary)
In fact it is hard to digest today that California was won by Republicans in EVERY presidential election from 1968 to 1988

All fairly close elections

Hilary's share of 61.7% in 2016 is the highest for any candidate in California since Roosevelt in 1936
New York is somewhat different from California in that the Democrats have always been dominant in NY as compared to Cal

Even in 1996 (when politics was less polarized), Clinton won 59.5% of the vote in NY, with Bob Dole winning just 31%

Did you know that a teaching approach that strongly emphasizes positive reinforcement as opposed to negative correction has huge benefits both inside and outside specific area you're teaching? Here's one part of how my parents helped my brothers and I excel in life.

When I was growing up my mother was extremely talented in a lot of different ways (painting, writing, etc.) and she often spent time with my brother and I teaching us how to explore and work on these things together, with a strong emphasis on positive reinforcement.

As she brought other people into our lives (nannies, teachers at school, etc.) she sought to find others that did the same. At the time the conventional wisdom in many places was that "children need to really know when they make mistakes so that they won't make them again."

(3) Every point POTUS made was already known to me, & to you, if you've been following actual events & trends, instead of the MSM spin.

YES the murder of Mr Khashoggi was AWFUL & it is NOT condoned by Trump, the US, or me, or you.

A President must consider the whole picture.

2. I appreciate Jeet Heer's praise for my book on moderate Republicans, but he doesn't seem to have read it because the views he ascribes to me are more or less the opposite of what I believe. Start with the idea that I "lamented" the new wave of scholarship on conservatism...
3. Why would I lament that? I was calling 20 years ago for academic historians to study conservatism seriously. I'm delighted with the results. If Politico had let me, I would have offered a gallery of superb histories, for ex. Nikki Hemmer on con media: amazon.com/Messengers-Rig…

Earlier today, @realdonaldtrump unblocked my twitter account. I thought I should probably talk about this in a little more detail.
Around the end of 2016, I started writing fact-checking responses to Trump’s twitter account. With a few exceptions (mostly frustration based) I tried to keep things to the facts. It is not hard to refute most of his statements.
Much to my surprise, I found that these tweets got a lot of traction. Some of them ended up being seen over a million times. Some of this was probably because they were useful. More is because as a verified user my comments were ranked fairly highly.
