Let’s talk about freedom.

Nobody writes about it better than U.S. Senator @BenSasse.

Thread.
Production vs. Consumption:

“There is nothing more important we can do for our young than convince them that production is more satisfying than consumption.

A hallmark of virtuous adulthood is learning to find freedom in work, not freedom from work, even when work might hurt.”
Reminds me of these words from Seth Godin:

“Accountability is done to you. It’s done by the industrial system, by those that want to create blame.

Responsibility is done by you. It’s voluntary. You can take as much of it as you want.”
Senator Sasse used to be the president of Midland University.

He observed that students desired freedom *from* responsibilities, class and chores.

“They described cancelled classes as the best part of their four years of college.”
Students didn't have the eyes to see "freedom to" categories.

Freedom to learn, to read, to be coached, to be mentored and internships.

When you work, you begin to see a broad range of work differently.
We’ve forgotten what we’ve always known.

“What humans need and want isn’t a complete release of tension and responsibility, but the pursuit of a worthwhile goal that they chose freely”

— Viktor Frankl
This is my favorite line from Senator Sasse:

“Work is a necessary component to becoming a fully formed American adult. A life well lived entails a forward leaning embrace of responsibility.”

Timeless wisdom.

But in today’s world, it feels contrarian.
“A strenuous life is the kind of life that recognizes and seeks out the fulfillment of production and ignores the un-fulfillment of excessive consumption. If the unexamined life is not worth living, then neither is a live of passive, slothful ease.”

— Theodore Roosevelt
