Prüm database (named after town where EU members agreed the plan). This allows police in UK to search for a DNA match against profiles held in other nations. So, for instance, a member of a cross-border organised crime gang trafficking women into sexual slavery.
Richard Martin, the police chief in charge of Brexit planinng, told MPs last year: "We should not play with security... if we were to not get a deal, then we are not going to be as safe as we currently are."
If we leave without a deal, access to these databases is turned off. The alternative, as we understand it, is a far slower request system via Interpol. No instantaneous database-searching - which is used all the time by officers on the beat who come across suspects.
