What was alarming about how the White House handled the record of the conversation?

According to a person familiar with the content of the complaint, it has to do with how the record was stored.
When the call was over, senior White House officials pulled the verbatim transcript out of the system that it is traditionally stored in and put it into a separate system reserved for extremely sensitive/highly compartmented programs.
The call had nothing to do with highly classified programs, but by moving it into this separate system, the White House could control who could see the transcript: only a very small group of people.

Here is the first letter from the Intelligence Community IG to Schiff, dated September 9. intelligence.house.gov/uploadedfiles/…

That is when Rep. Schiff first became aware that a complaint existed, but did not know what it was about.
After the IG received the complaint on Aug. 12, he took 14 days to review it & determine whether it was credible and met the legal definition of an "urgent concern."

Then, he sent the complaint to the acting director of national intelligence on Aug. 26.
The whistleblower addressed his letter to Burr and Schiff, but that doesn't mean he filed it with them. That wouldn't have been lawful.

He followed whistleblower procedures and filed his complaint with the IG.

IC Inspector General told @RepAdamSchiff that:

The "subject matter involved in the complainant’s disclosure not only falls within the DNI’s jurisdiction, but relates to one of the most significant and important of the DNI’s responsibilities to the American people.”

WaPo with a story on Schiff's showdown with the acting director of national intelligence over a whistleblower complaint that is being withheld from the intelligence committee.
Through a spokesperson ODNI is claiming that it is "committed to fully complying with the law and upholding whistleblower protections and have done so here.” 🤔
According to the story, the whistleblower "once worked on the staff of the White House National Security Council, which frequently borrows intelligence community personnel."

No sourcing for that though.

I question the public value of reporting this, but frankly, if the Times could figure this out, so could White House staff, which is almost certainly enough to ID the person. The odds Trump doesn’t already know who this is are, unfortunately, somewhere between slim and nil.
Which means it’s down to Gina Haspel to reject the inevitable push for illegal retaliation.
I’ll confess, on initially reading the whistleblower complaint I did a little mental Red Team exercise: If I were the White House, how would I attack this complaint to deanonymize the whistleblower? And my impression was that it would probably be very, very easy.
