This time last year, we were anxiously waiting for the Supreme Court's Constitution Bench to pronounce the #AadhaarJudgment. We were hopeful, we were worried, but we think we were prepared. #Aadhaar wasn't - isn't - going away so easily. The govt has continued pushing #Aadhaar...
..and so we need to keep talking about #Aadhaar, we need to mark this "anniversary" of the #AadhaarJudgment as a day we were reminded of how uphill the struggle for rights is. @aamvakil and @godavar tell us where we stand and what we are still fighting

The #AadhaarJudgment failed to account for the "tragedy of errors" that #Aadhaar is. Dr. Reetika Khera spelled out all the errors in this piece #ReUp @roadscholarz

If the problem of exclusions has been glossed over, children are getting pushed under the #Aadhaar net most perversely. @Kritika12 describes this relentless targeting

Was #Aadhaar meant to facilitate welfare delivery, or was it meant to track people's (and government's) money? The #AadhaarJudgment prohibited private sector use, but the Aadhaar Payment Bridge System lives on - a bridge to nowhere

"What technology has broken cannot be fixed by the law. Aadhaar is a broken technology; it is surveillance technology disguised as developmental intervention..." said @sunil_abraham in 2016 #ReUp

Even apart from enabling surveillance directly, the #Aadhaar ecosystem is plagued with security loopholes and #AadhaarLeaks have been reported repeatedly.

The dangers of "databasing" an entire population, and especially collecting biometrics, have been underlined by #UshaRamanathan and others almost ever since the #Aadhaar project has been in existence. Again, ignored in #AadhaarJudgment. See, for instance:

Dr. @AnupamSaraph has also asked pointed questions about the ethics of targeted money transfers, most recently in this piece

We'll keep adding to this thread over the next week and give you - to borrow that phrase - a "360° view" of #Aadhaar. Meanwhile, tune in at 9pm today for our first open online discussion of the #AadhaarJudgment
"The question of who qualifies to be an Indian citizen is pending before the SC since 2014. And Aadhaar is no proof of citizenship. So, how will the proposed NRC affect Aadhaar and citizenship?" asks @trippoddar

The #AadhaarJudgment has had an international impact. @namanwa points out how "The current trend of digital identity programmes not only ignores [exclusions], but also take away agency from the users by not providing them any rights or remedies." #Aadhaar

"The driving force behind the UID project is corporate interest. The JAM trinity – of Jan Dhan (bank accounts), UID (#Aadhaar) and Mobile is the structure of which the UID is a necessary part" writes #UshaRamanathan, one year after the #AadhaarJudgment
