I've been having this thought a lot. The critique is still pretty informed. But it comes back to how a lot of Americans subscribe to magical thinking when it comes to why our system works. Bad actors can't be shamed into stopping the harm they do. You have to fight.
This overlaps with the critique of Whiteness as well. A lot of white Americans are still very confused when the system doesn't "just work" in their favor. That's what they're used to. They keep waiting for some magic to happen to save them. There is no magic.
All of that is wrapped up in statements like "history will judge" or "this isn't who we are". One of my favorite questions to ask white people is "who is we?" History has a bad habit of *not* judging Whiteness until the harm has progressed to the worst extremes.
