the ny times has a lot of very good journalism. the very bad journalism's impact far outweighs the good.
this one very bad ny times story from 17 years ago created a ripple effect that will still be felt for decades to come. it overshadows everything. and its not alone.
also the other problem is the ny times is largely unresponsive to criticism. their reporters believe they all float on air, are snippy with liberals, and there is no public editor.

One of my best friends died twenty years ago today. His name was Jos Claerbout, and he was one of the best people I've known. I only knew him for a few years and have more Jos stories than I can count, but, since I mostly talk movies here, I'll share some Jos movie stories. 1/???
I met Jos freshman year of college through the radio station. He was excited that I was an aspiring filmmaker, and one evening started talking to him and his friend Jano about a film I had started writing with Matthew (a remake of a classic Western with mutants instead of Apache)
He was probably the most enthusiastic person I'd ever met, so he immediately wanted to be involved. His only condition was that he get to play a mutant with an arm growing out of his head. Obviously, this movie never happened.

Good thread. Note that these questions first came up years ago, but have been mostly ignored by a press that overwhelmingly accepted Omar's denials and dismissals without question.
We now at least have strong evidence that Omar:

1) Violated the law by filing joint tax returns with someone she was not married to (Hirsi)

2) Committed perjury re contact with Elmi

3) Misused campaign funds to pay divorce attorney

4) Repeatedly lied regarding the situation
A lot of question remain about exact circumstances of her multiple marriages and why she repeatedly lied.

I went freelance in 2011 after finishing a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature. I had no background in #journalism, and every day that I continue to survive seems miraculous. Inspired by @samirashackle, I'm sharing advice in case it is useful for those who have been laid off.
1. Ideally have six months of expenses saved (I didn't at the time but would do this later). The most difficult part of freelancing is that nobody pays you on time. In some cases, you will need a letter from a lawyer to get outlets to pay you.
2. I didn't have money saved and started out working for free or for really low rates. As you can imagine, I eventually went broke and ended up sleeping on my brother's couch for a few months. In the end, it was no big deal. Failure is a part of the process.
