REPUBLIC IN PERIL

1. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that we are in a precarious position as a nation. A nation divided. The events of the last few weeks & indeed the last 3 years have proven that there is no reliable arbiter of facts available to the masses.
2. The deleterious effects of this fact stops debate in it's tracks before it can even begin. Neither side of the debate can bridge the chasm between as each side has their own set of "facts," and never the tween shall meet.
3. So, I ask you, what happens when a national emergency occurs? There is no reliable source for accurate and unbiased information that the majority of people trust. One's first instinct will be to disbelieve any reporting on said emergency. Chaos will ensue.
4. How long would it take for our society to break down into anarchy?
"Brothers will turn against their own brothers and hand them over to be killed. Fathers will hand over their own children to be killed. Children will fight against their own parents and will have them killed."
5. America as we have known it relies upon it's press to accurately report the news. A 2016 comprehensive study, by The Media Insight Project, shows that trust and reliability in news can be broken down into specific factors that publishers can use & consumers can recognize.
6. Quote from the study
"Accuracy is the paramount principle of trust. 85% of Americans rate it as extremely or very important that news organizations get the facts right, higher than any other general principle. getting the facts right — is most valued regardless of the topic."
8. So, what do we do about it? Liberals want to shut-down "conservative" media presumably because they don't have confidence in the strength of their argument and conservatives fear government regulation of the press as it violates our core principles of less government.
9. That leaves us as a Republic in Peril. How long before the rift becomes irreparable? What will be the spark that ignites the fire? A close election in which both sides believe the other has manipulated the result? The impeachment of a duly elected president on shaky "facts?"
10. A politician who plays on the disinformation propagated by the media that our elections can be determined by a foreign power and therefore cannot be trusted thus leaving the Courts to decide the presidency?

Truly a nexus in history is upon us. Which way will we turn?
