1. We all know Trump spouts conspiracy theories all the time (Birtherism, "deep state") but the big revelation of Ukrainegate is that this isn't just for show. He believes this shit.
2. The Trumpian Deep State conspiracy theory goes something like this: The USA intel community, working with allies in Australia & Europe, entrapped Trump campaigners in Russiagate in 2015/2016 because they didn't like Trump's heterodox foreign policy views. Trump believes this.
3. One reason we haven't had a good discussion of Trump's conspiracy theories is dominant narrative of conspiracies (Hofstadter's "paranoid style") is deeply misleading. For Hofstadter, conspiracy theories flourished on fringes, not among elites.
4. But conspiracy theories don't just belong to masses. Plenty of elites believe in wild & absurd stuff. "Who lost China?" was an elite debate. J. Edgar Hoover an elite powerhouse. LBJ thought anti-war movement was created by foreign adversaries.

This deserves a more nuanced response than it's getting. 1. The full quote is more interesting than the headline. 2. People are allowed to dislike genres 3. Scorsese's view are of interest not just because great achievements but also because his immense knowledge of film history
4. I like Marvel movies more than Scorsese does & think some of them (Black Panther, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) are not just good examples of the genre but genuinely good movies 5. Having said that, if you dislike a genre even best example of it won't please you.
6. When Scorsese says "that’s not cinema" it might be useful to consider that by "cinema" he means (whether he knows it or not) a particular sub-genre of movies: the art house & auteurist films of circa 1950s to early 1980s. That's his gold standard.

1. One of the really big problems of the Trump administration is that there are so many scandals that it's actually hard for the human mind to process them all or for the political system to respond accordingly.
2. I mean, lots of news happened yesterday with impeachment & Trump's use of his foreign policy to go after his criminals. But there was also an important (and barely noticed) report on how Trump administration was undermining autonomy of government science.
3. The impeachment stuff is important but the background scandals of the administration -- the undermining of the state in the name of plutocracy -- will do more lasting damage. I have some thoughts on all this here: thenation.com/article/trump-…

1. Lynda Barry started trending when she won a MacArthur fellowship last week and for good reason. Lots of people love her work. But it's more than that -- she's been a mentor and inspiration to two generation of writers, cartoonists and artists.
2. Certain artists are contagious: people not only love their work but also get a kind of permission from it to make their own art. Dylan was like that and so is @NearSitedMonkey. She has a way of opening up people to their own creativity.
3. If you ever have a chance to attend one of Lynda Barry's art & writing workshops, you should take it. It's the most mind-altering thing you can do short of dropping acid. I explain why here thenation.com/article/macart…

Every now and then I check in to the official FB page of the GOP for the Central Pennsylvania county in which I grew up, and where my family had lived since the 1910s.
The mood on the page over the past few days has been....angry, defiant, and a bit trigger-happy if I'm going to be totally honest. There's the usual stuff about taking guns and banning Jesus and socialism taking your money to help undeserving people.
But then there's even more apocalyptic stuff about the end times and the need to be prepared. The mainstream media has become state media (though media against the head of state, but whatevs), and also it's time to read 2 Timothy 3.

Trump knows the conspiracy theory about Ukraine & the DNC server is fake. He made clear he knew Russia hacked the election when he told Putin's men in the Oval Offc he was NOT concerned they interfered. Judging by the reception & secret info he gave them, he was quite grateful.
Tom Bossert may think Trump believes his own propaganda. I don't. I think Trump believes he gets away w lies when the media repeat them. That's always worked for him. I think he keeps pushing the Ukraine conspiracy theory to take the heat off Russia, to please Putin. #UkraineGate
Trump & his propagandists lie purposely. They don't care if the claims are clearly false, even crazy. All that matters is that we keep repeating the lies. Even fact-checking lies has an impact. Some will doubt, be confused about what's true. That's the point. As @Kasparov63 says.
