Going into the call, Zelensky knew that Trump had no sympathy for Ukraine. For years, Trump has excused Russian aggression there, making it clear that he is not concerned about Russia’s annexation of Crimea or Moscow’s backing of separatists in eastern Ukraine. 2/11
Trump has also repeatedly peddled conspiracy accusing Ukraine of helping Clinton in 2016, and signaled his willingness to throw Ukraine under the bus as part of a grand bargain with Putin. So, for Zelensky, the importance of getting on Trump’s good side could not be higher. 3/11
