I admire Botham Jean's brother's capacity for forgiveness. However, isn't forgiveness something we, as a people, demand of Black victims of white violence? It is a morality play that is recast with every murderer.

There is an expectation of forgiveness to be given freely without even being asked, without apology or accountability, even when the killer lied about the victim, the media asks, "Do you forgive...?"

You don't see this expectation when the victim is white. How many times does a reporter ask the people Trump features who have lost someone to an undocumented immigrant? Some do forgive, but that is featured as exceptional, not expected.
That's why Jeremiah Harvey is my hero. "I don't forgive this woman, and she needs help." And of course, his refusing was an outrage for a few days. Good for him! You go, Jeremiah!

By the way, this is not the first time I have talked about the constant demand that Black people forgive. Here is a reporter asking "do you forgive..." when the accused has no remorse & pissing me off.

A few times, I have tweeted about the elasticity of whiteness and how it expands to maintain white hegemony. This is an example of the process of becoming white, of some Asian-Americans allying with whiteness to oppose race-conscious programs that remediate historic oppression.
Just as people of Slavic and Meditteranean ancestry have been added to whiteness, as 2050 approaches, in addition to race-based voter suppression, I am certain that some Asians will "become white" or at least be in alliance with white as hegemonic powers
It won't be Pacific Islanders, but Chinese and Japanese Americans, possibly Korean-Americans. Perhaps Indian Americans. Whiteness is, after all, not a race, but a power construct that is at heart not-Black

I like #BelowDeckMed, but you can see how kissing Capt Sandy's ass is all it takes to succeed. Joao worked hard, but didn't manage lazy Jack or drunk Travis well. Hannah worked hard, had her staff moved around and often assigned to the galley, had June who ignored her, and still
managed to keep guests happy while Joao's crew screwed up multiple times and yet Joao always praising Sandy and kissing ass made him "wonderful" and Hannah "lack passion"
I guess @hannahferrier_ should have complained to Sandy about how hard it is and ask for advice on how to deal so Sandy would feel like a mentor and praise her. If she can be your mentor, then you're good. If you do well on your own, you have no fucking passion

This Amber Guyger case is really a reenactment and referendum on American history. She colonized Botham Jean's home, murdering him for being in "her" way. The judge ruling the jury can consider castle doctrine is a declaration of manifest destiny.
All the white people defending Amber Guyger for the preposterous defense that she thought it was her house - that's the Monroe Doctrine, telling non-white people to keep their nose out of policing white people.
And so we wait for a jury who has been primed to acquit by the judge allowing Guyger to claim castle doctrine in someone else's home, a real colonizer.

The reason why people can’t understand Botham Jeans younger brother, Brandt, choosing to forgive Amber Guyger is because they have no sense of their own sinful nature.

They don’t know what it’s like to be forgiven of their own trespasses on grace alone.

People tend to view themselves as good people by default. This makes it easier to condemn others for their wrongdoings while ignoring their own.

Christianity teaches that you are sick and in need of a physician and that your only hope of getting better is in Christ alone.
Brandt understood this. He recognized that he is no less a sinner than the murderer of his older brother. They are in the same boat, so even though he had a right to condemn her, he didn’t.

Judge Kemp is on the bench in Dallas. Yesterday Amber Guyger was convicted of first degree murder for killing Botham Jean. After the verdict they went immediately to sentencing phase. Today the sentencing hearing continues. Jury is back in the courtroom.
So far we learned: Botham was perfect (not that he needed to be, but he happened to be). Amber, meanwhile, if her texts and social media are to be believed, is a racist violent white supremacist cop who “jokes” about pepper spraying and even killing civilians. So, there’s that.
Amber Guyger’s mother Karen is on the stand; testifying for defense to start sentencing hearing for the day.

Wonder if she regrets that racist “All Lives Matter” shirt yet, or naw. Looks like killer cop Guyger got her racism honest.

White supremacy starts at home.

It’s been 2 weeks since the horrendous shooting in El Paso, the murder of 22 innocent individuals & wounding of 24 others. 2 weeks, #ElPasoShooting is no longer trending, most news outlets have dropped the story, the process of forgetting has begun.
There are several things that may explain why we’ve begun to forget El Paso. Many people don’t know the city and it may seems geographically far removed from the worldview of folks unfamiliar with the Southwest.
The victims of the shooting, mainly Mexican/Mexican American people, may seem unfamiliar to some Americans, beyond the rhetoric/stereotyping of the immigration reform debate. Many people probably don’t see Mexican-origin people as the “normal” victims of racist violence.

Anderson had been quietly pleased when Connor told him he’d be staying for the entirety of the spring semester. Usually, Connor had to split his time between his home office in Texas and the student labs in Detroit.
He’s doubly pleased the first time he witnesses Connor run an entire lecture and lab on his own. In the past, Connor had deferred to Anderson since he wasn’t a constant presence. Now, Anderson wonders if he shouldn’t have let Connor lead labs sooner.
