I was asked to write this and I was emotional and angry. Tired, really. But I wanted to share my thought process when writing these 750+ words about the proximity of premature death/racism in Dallas and in this country. THREAD. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…
I’m an artist & MC. I always think about ideas in song lyrics. No other song title conveys proximity to premature death better than 2Pac’s “Death Around The Corner”(especially since his best work, ME AGAINST THE WORLD, released when he was in prison):
I decided to start with Tupac’s words because, in his lyrics, he located how CLOSE death was in his lived experience. Racism has a way of making that easy for you. He understood a radical political framework, predicted his premature death in this country and was killed at 25.

Just got this email. Not sure if my writings/ appearances sparked it, or simply my existence as a black person. This is what we're fighting against. This is why people are rebelling across the nation. Stop pretending this mindset is rare and start realizing what's at stake
My colleagues in media, ESPECIALLY black women, get these emails every day. And phone calls, and letters. At least we get to respond on air, in print, online. The vast majority of black people subjected to verbal assault and wanton police and vigilante violence do not
Our pain pales in comparison to #BreonnaTaylor #GeorgeFloyd #AhmadArbery #BothamJean #AtatianaJefferson families. But let me be clear. This nation's inability to treat black people with basic decency and humanity doesn't change whether you are on the street in bed or on air

Reasons Black people have been murdered in 21st century America:

Praying, biking, driving, running, lying down, holding skittles, breathing, being home.

#AtatianaJefferson
And while we're contemplating the injustice of #AtatianaJefferson's killing, think of #OscarGrant, shot in the back as he lay face down.

#PhilandoCastile, shot to death inside his car for NO reason.

Or #TamirRice, gunned down for holding a toy, which I describe in my book...
Think of #SandraBland, #EricGarner, #BothamJean.

Think of being Black and living in a nation where you're safe NOWHERE. Not at home. Not in church. Not on the street.

And where law enforcement can gun you down without consequences.

This is an important message from @TheEllenShow.

Shame she had to say it.

But we’re so divided, that simply laughing with someone from the other side creates an outrage.

If America is ever going to heal—we need to learn the civility of #EllenDeGeneres.
Many of your comments express a total aversion and confusion over the idea of treating a man like George Bush with care and civility.

If you need an example of how that can be accomplished—
take a lesson from this amazing woman.

#EllenDeGeneres #GeorgeWBush
I’m really loving all the replies telling me what Bush did—as if I wasn’t directly affected by his lies.

I’m not making excuses for what he did.

I’m simply supporting the idea of civility—and that it doesn’t have to come with binary conditions.

There’s been a lot of talk about #Forgiveness in the African American community.

Many are calling it “conditioning” by our society, and something that should come to an end.

I hope these opinions don’t become a reality.

(thread)
#AmberGuygerSentencing

If the actions of #BothamJean’s brother, the black officer, and the black judge, were somehow a form of “conditioning”— I wish all of us were conditioned to do the same.

#Forgiveness
#Forgiveness is not a shameful thing.

In fact, it’s something I’ve always admired about the African American community.

It’s just a shame that it’s always your community who’s put in the position of needing to forgive.

In Judaism, we emphasize sincere repentance—incl fully owning harm done & deep transformational work to become the kind of person who makes different choices.

Not forgiveness.

& only the victim can truly forgive.

And sometimes the victim has been murdered.

1/x

#BothamJean
Of course, a person who has been harmed can always choose to forgive irrespective of whether the perpetrator has done the work of repentance, and those impacted by harm (family of the victim) can forgive as well. It can sometimes be healing & freeing to do so, yes.
But we speak in the language of obligation, & there’s no obligation on the victim of an unrepentant perpetrator, or on other people, to do so. And when harm cannot be truly repaired, there’s no obligation to forgive.

The jury in the Amber Guyger trial is now deliberating on a sentence. Her murder conviction could result in 5 to 99 years in prison. However, the judge permitted a “sudden passion” caveat, which could reduce the sentence from 2 to 20 years. #BothamJean cbsnews.com/news/amber-guy…
The state just asked the jury to sentence Amber Guyger to a minimum of 28 years – the age of Botham Jean would be if he were alive today. His birthday was earlier this week. #BothamJean
And while the state agreed to allow “sudden passion” to be considered in sentencing, prosecutors argued against it during closing arguments: “This is not a five, 10 or 15-year case. Botham didn’t provoke his own death,” prosecutor LaQuita Long. #BothamJean fox4news.com/news/jury-now-…

BREAKING: A judge has ruled a jury can consider the Castle Doctrine - basically a Stand Your Ground law - during deliberations to determine whether a Texas woman should be punished for entering the wrong apartment and fatally shooting an unarmed Black man. dfw.cbslocal.com/2019/09/30/jur…
Stand Your Ground laws allow residents to use force, including deadly force, if they "reasonably believe" they‘re at risk of death or bodily harm. The law specifies that people have "no duty to retreat" from their homes or vehicles if they feel threatened. #BothamJean #txlege
The @urbaninstitute found that when white shooters kill Black victims, homicides are 11 times more likely to be deemed justifiable. Justifiable homicide rates among people shot to death among the Black population doubled between 2005 to 2011 in Stand Your Ground states.

Let me better explain this to you.

Hours after a stranger shot #BothamJean IN HIS APARTMENT, police got a search warrant to search HIS APARTMENT.

They began their investigation into HIS MURDER by searching through HIS belongings.
American Police are fundamentally INCAPABLE of policing and investigating themselves.
In his 26 years on earth, Botham Jean NEVER had a single ticket, a single arrest, a single conviction, or even a single behavioral note in college.

Not one. Ever.

How dare police and the media attempt to insult his character and integrity today.

Fuck the @DallasPD and fuck @Fox4 for rolling with this headline.

#BothamJean is the VICTIM.

He was shot and killed in his own apartment.

WHAT WAS FOUND IN AMBER GUYGER'S APARTMENT? IN HER CAR? PURSE?

Why is Botham being treated like the perpetrator of a crime here?
I've written nearly 1,500 articles on injustice in America. Let me tell you 1 essential thing I've learned.

More times than not, local TV stations, like @Fox4 in Dallas, have such close relationships w/ police departments that they function like police propaganda machines.
BREAKING: Since authorities searched the apartment of murder victim #BothamJean & released the results I just asked them for the results of the warrant of Amber Guyger's home -since she was the perpetrator.

Guess what they said?

IT DOES NOT EXIST.

They NEVER searched her home!

.@NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch says Americans must always be armed and ready to shoot anyone who enters their home, including police. The @NRA has pushed pass state bills allowing citizens to shoot anyone illegally entering a home or car, including police. mm4a.org/4ov
The @NRA also has a long history of victim blaming: "This could have been very different if #BothamJean had been a law abiding gun owner. ...this could have been very different had he actually had a firearm on him. She might have been the one carried out," Dana Loesch
Reminder that Loesch and the @NRA advocate for stripping mandatory training out of state gun laws and oppose requiring background checks on private gun sales, making their advice - meant to sell guns - a recipe for citizens unintentionally shooting family members and neighbors.

#BothamJean was murdered in his apartment by a white woman police officer whose name I've yet to see in print. Ok, press. Protect her identity as long as possible even though she entered the wrong apartment, pulled her gun and shot a man minding his own damn business.
By all accounts, a very good man who was minding his own damn business. #BothamJean earned a bachelor's degree from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. There's a reason you've never heard of it--it's a tiny private Christian college run by the Church of Christ.
And if you've never heard of THAT denomination, well, how can I explain the church I grew up in? Imagine the Puritans--stoic, sober and austere in their worship and expression, in their decorum. #BothamJean attended one of the few CoC unis in the US, on purpose.
