I almost quit this project bc seeing the faces of these men, reading the stories of their lives and families and realizing how unjust and cruel this world is was weighing on me. But I think we need this catalogue. It’s not comprehensive, and I know I have missed
many names and faces but I’m hoping this small catalogue can serve as a reminder of how systemic racism works. Also not every case makes the news.
I also found so many cases in Canada, Australian, the UK &beyond. Police brutality is a world wide cancer, &this does not even touch

This isn’t true. There are three primary databases that track killings by police - Mapping Police Violence (ours), FatalEncounters, and the Washington Post. Between those, WaPo is the least comprehensive and the only one which doesn’t include non-shooting and off-duty killings.
What you’re referencing is the fact that the WaPo database in particular does not comprehensively track killings by police and is cited frequently in ways that underreport the scale of violence (WaPo also misses some on-duty fatal police shootings as well btw).
The WaPo data also underreports unarmed people killed by police. They don’t categorize people holding objects that aren’t weapons as unarmed and also don’t track the huge proportion of unarmed people who are killed by police tasers, restraints, etc and not shootings.

I was asked to write this and I was emotional and angry. Tired, really. But I wanted to share my thought process when writing these 750+ words about the proximity of premature death/racism in Dallas and in this country. THREAD. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…
I’m an artist & MC. I always think about ideas in song lyrics. No other song title conveys proximity to premature death better than 2Pac’s “Death Around The Corner”(especially since his best work, ME AGAINST THE WORLD, released when he was in prison):
I decided to start with Tupac’s words because, in his lyrics, he located how CLOSE death was in his lived experience. Racism has a way of making that easy for you. He understood a radical political framework, predicted his premature death in this country and was killed at 25.

Just got this email. Not sure if my writings/ appearances sparked it, or simply my existence as a black person. This is what we're fighting against. This is why people are rebelling across the nation. Stop pretending this mindset is rare and start realizing what's at stake
My colleagues in media, ESPECIALLY black women, get these emails every day. And phone calls, and letters. At least we get to respond on air, in print, online. The vast majority of black people subjected to verbal assault and wanton police and vigilante violence do not
Our pain pales in comparison to #BreonnaTaylor #GeorgeFloyd #AhmadArbery #BothamJean #AtatianaJefferson families. But let me be clear. This nation's inability to treat black people with basic decency and humanity doesn't change whether you are on the street in bed or on air

Reasons Black people have been murdered in 21st century America:

Praying, biking, driving, running, lying down, holding skittles, breathing, being home.

#AtatianaJefferson
And while we're contemplating the injustice of #AtatianaJefferson's killing, think of #OscarGrant, shot in the back as he lay face down.

#PhilandoCastile, shot to death inside his car for NO reason.

Or #TamirRice, gunned down for holding a toy, which I describe in my book...
Think of #SandraBland, #EricGarner, #BothamJean.

Think of being Black and living in a nation where you're safe NOWHERE. Not at home. Not in church. Not on the street.

And where law enforcement can gun you down without consequences.

It's an old tactic of white Christians to:
1) cling to the worst-faith interpretation of your words and actions
2) cast aspersions on the theological orthodoxy and even the salvation of Black Christians who express an opinion they don't like.
#BothamJean #Forgiveness Image
Of course, others just accuse the people pointing out racism of being racists. It's like blaming the rain on the one who says it's raining. And many of them probably have trouble loving themselves so they can't love others and lash out at others in a rage. ImageImageImage
This is the work. Telling the truth when you know it will anger people. Disciplining yourself not to respond with hate. But the work is rewarding. Somehow hope finds a way to manifest itself--often through community. You find others on the way who share the burden and their love.

In Judaism, we emphasize sincere repentance—incl fully owning harm done & deep transformational work to become the kind of person who makes different choices.

Not forgiveness.

& only the victim can truly forgive.

And sometimes the victim has been murdered.

1/x

#BothamJean
Of course, a person who has been harmed can always choose to forgive irrespective of whether the perpetrator has done the work of repentance, and those impacted by harm (family of the victim) can forgive as well. It can sometimes be healing & freeing to do so, yes.
But we speak in the language of obligation, & there’s no obligation on the victim of an unrepentant perpetrator, or on other people, to do so. And when harm cannot be truly repaired, there’s no obligation to forgive.

BREAKING: Amber Guyger, a Dallas police officer, sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of Botham Jean, an unarmed Black man whom she shot after walking into the wrong apartment. #BothamJean

The jury in the Amber Guyger trial is now deliberating on a sentence. Her murder conviction could result in 5 to 99 years in prison. However, the judge permitted a “sudden passion” caveat, which could reduce the sentence from 2 to 20 years. #BothamJean cbsnews.com/news/amber-guy…
The state just asked the jury to sentence Amber Guyger to a minimum of 28 years – the age of Botham Jean would be if he were alive today. His birthday was earlier this week. #BothamJean
And while the state agreed to allow “sudden passion” to be considered in sentencing, prosecutors argued against it during closing arguments: “This is not a five, 10 or 15-year case. Botham didn’t provoke his own death,” prosecutor LaQuita Long. #BothamJean fox4news.com/news/jury-now-…

BREAKING: A judge has ruled a jury can consider the Castle Doctrine - basically a Stand Your Ground law - during deliberations to determine whether a Texas woman should be punished for entering the wrong apartment and fatally shooting an unarmed Black man. dfw.cbslocal.com/2019/09/30/jur…
Stand Your Ground laws allow residents to use force, including deadly force, if they "reasonably believe" they‘re at risk of death or bodily harm. The law specifies that people have "no duty to retreat" from their homes or vehicles if they feel threatened. #BothamJean #txlege
The @urbaninstitute found that when white shooters kill Black victims, homicides are 11 times more likely to be deemed justifiable. Justifiable homicide rates among people shot to death among the Black population doubled between 2005 to 2011 in Stand Your Ground states.

.@NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch says Americans must always be armed and ready to shoot anyone who enters their home, including police. The @NRA has pushed pass state bills allowing citizens to shoot anyone illegally entering a home or car, including police. mm4a.org/4ov
The @NRA also has a long history of victim blaming: "This could have been very different if #BothamJean had been a law abiding gun owner. ...this could have been very different had he actually had a firearm on him. She might have been the one carried out," Dana Loesch
Reminder that Loesch and the @NRA advocate for stripping mandatory training out of state gun laws and oppose requiring background checks on private gun sales, making their advice - meant to sell guns - a recipe for citizens unintentionally shooting family members and neighbors.
