#Libyan authorities raided a women’s tweetup at #Benghazi cafe, detained staff & announced it had broken up an “immoral” gathering. Read more about how the raid was used to promote a “law and order” campaign & how it resulted in misogynist attacks against the women h/t @PSilphium
Why raid a women’s gathering? Is a group of women meeting that scary for #Libyan authorities? Or are they deliberately using misogyny to drum up support, pretending they put an end to “immorality” for the sake of “security”?
A group of women meeting in a #Benghazi cafe are not the #Libyan authorities biggest concern. There are serious security concerns they should focus on. This is a reminder that patriarchy uses “immorality” and the need to control women to drum up support.

The Case for a ‘Strategic Backstop' mechanism for Libya

#LibyaStrategicBackstop
#Libya needs a strategic relationship with one member of the #UNSC to act as an International ‘Backstop’.

The purpose of the Strategic Backstop mechanism is to ensure effective 'Triangulation' of the #Libyan transition and ‘stop’ #Libya from falling ‘back’ into conflict
Without a strategic backstop mechanism, the unity and stability of the #UN Security Council itself is at stake.

In this thread I will lay out what why both #Libya and the International Community, need this backstop, and how it could function.

Twitter Thread - #NewStartforLibya

Ladies and gentlemen, the political and economic situation in #Libya today makes life hard for everyone, for #Libyans, our neighbours and the rest of the world. But we may still have hope that this can change.
I tweet today, not as a representative of any institution, faction or interest group but as someone who only wants the best for Libya; and #Libya surely deserves much better than she has had for the last fifty or so years.
I want to give you a summary of ideas that I have been developing for some time with a group of friends, professionals and academics which has become something of an informal think-tank.
