The OP asked for real world advice on how we got where we are.

If I can get an in-person interview & have my hair and makeup done, I can charge more.

Knowing that people are influenced by appearance, is 1 of the most effective tools in my arsenal.

I hate that this tool works.

I know that this is not a tool everyone can use. As creatives, I think it's important to remember when we're dispensing advice that not everyone has the same privileges that we do.

That said... Taking time on grooming, to present the best version of yourself, will always help.

The best version of yourself does not have to meet media standards fashion and beauty. Find clothes, hair, & makeup (or not), that look intentional and represent you.

I will also say, that @scalzi is right that creatives usually under value our work. Especially women.

So you should probably charge more than you are currently charging.

It's just, that naming a price and expecting people to take it isn't advice that applies to everyone.
