OUTRAGE: A 21 y/o overslept & missed jury duty. This Judge —John Kastrenakis—sentenced him to 10 days jail, 1 year probation, 150 hours community service, $223 fine, & to write a “sincere” apology. After appeal, judge reduced probation to 3 months & community service to 30 hours.
Harsh, irrational & unreasonable judges & carceral actors like John Kastrenakis are who we should focus our outrage on. Not the rare judges or prosecutors who extends leniency & mercy even to those who we might feel are undeserving. Fight the former & ask for more of the latter.
It’s all so egregious. After 10 days jailed for oversleeping, witnessing horrors inside, leaving granddad w/o a caretaker, missing work at afterschool program, & led out in cuffs, judge explains impt of jury duty to American “justice” w/o a hint of irony.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/f…
This poor young man. Terrified his simple mistake—now a criminal record—will dog him for the rest of his life. He’s traumatized. And he has a right to worry. This judge needs to be reprimanded, recalled if elected, & nationally shamed. There is no justification for any of this.
The kind of judge who would jail a young man for being late would also castigate a male lawyer for taking care of his baby.
Despite Judge Kastrenakes’ use of his power to hurt others, he also wants others to go easy on him. In 2010 he got pulled over. “Got out of his Lexus & argued w/ Trooper calling her a liar and saying he would dismiss any case she brought before his court.”sun-sentinel.com/opinion/fl-xpm…
